What Does SLS Actually Do to Your Skin?
Dream Glow Rituals · Melbourne, Australia · 8 min read
It is in your body wash. Your shampoo. Your face wash. Your intimate wash. Possibly your toothpaste. And almost nobody knows what it is actually doing to their skin every single day.
SLS — Sodium Lauryl Sulphate — is one of the most widely used ingredients in personal care products in the world. It is cheap, effective and has been used in cosmetics since the 1930s. It is also the reason so many people have chronically sensitive, irritated or reactive skin and have no idea why.
This is what SLS actually is, what it actually does, and why at Dream Glow Rituals we have never and will never use it in any of our products.
What exactly is SLS?
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a surfactant — a chemical compound that lowers the surface tension between substances, allowing oil and water to mix. In skincare and personal care products, it is the ingredient responsible for that thick, satisfying lather that makes you feel like a product is working.
Here is the thing about that lather: it does not clean any better than a product without it. The foam is almost entirely a sensory experience. We have been conditioned over decades of marketing to associate foam with cleanliness. But foam and clean are not the same thing. At all.
The industrial version of SLS — a close chemical relative of the compound used in your body wash — is used in engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners and heavy-duty industrial cleaning products. The skin-safe version is heavily diluted and processed, but the mechanism is the same: it is exceptionally good at stripping oil from surfaces.
Which brings us to the problem.
Your skin barrier — and why SLS destroys it
Your skin has a natural protective layer called the acid mantle — a thin, slightly acidic film on the surface of your skin made up of sebum (your skin's natural oil), sweat and other secretions. This layer has a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5, which is mildly acidic.
This acid mantle is your skin's first line of defence against the outside world. It keeps bacteria out. It keeps moisture in. It protects against environmental pollutants and helps maintain the balance of your skin's natural microbiome.
SLS has a pH of around 9 to 11 — highly alkaline. When you wash with an SLS-based product, you are not just removing dirt. You are stripping away your skin's natural oil and disrupting the delicate acid balance that protects you. Every single time.
Your skin then has to work hard to restore itself. In some people this happens relatively quickly. In people with dry, sensitive or reactive skin — it often cannot keep up. The result is a cycle of stripping and partial restoration that keeps your skin in a constant state of low-level irritation.
"Most people with chronically dry or sensitive skin are not born that way. They are washing that way."
Dream Glow Rituals · MelbourneSLS and intimate skin — why it is especially problematic
Intimate skin — the skin of the vulva, groin and surrounding areas — is significantly more permeable and sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. It absorbs more. It reacts more. And it has a natural pH that sits between 3.8 and 4.5 — even more acidic than regular skin, and for good reason.
The slightly acidic environment of intimate skin actively suppresses the growth of harmful bacteria and maintains the balance of healthy microorganisms that protect you. Disrupting this balance — even temporarily — creates conditions where irritation, imbalance and discomfort can thrive.
Using a body wash or intimate wash that contains SLS on this area every day is doing exactly that. Stripping the natural pH. Disrupting the microbiome. Leaving the skin barrier weakened and reactive.
Many women and people who experience recurring intimate discomfort, sensitivity or irritation are using SLS-based products daily without knowing it. The product marketed as "gentle" or "fresh" on the front of the bottle may have SLS listed on the back.
Where SLS hides on your label
SLS goes by several names on ingredients lists. Here are the ones to look for:
Note the difference between Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES). SLES is a milder derivative — it is processed differently and generally considered less irritating than SLS. However it is still a sulphate, still strips the skin barrier and is still something many people with sensitive skin react to. Neither belongs in intimate care products.
What to look for instead
The good news is that effective, genuinely gentle cleansing is absolutely possible without SLS or any sulphate. There are natural and naturally-derived surfactants that cleanse effectively while respecting your skin's pH and protective barrier.
What a clean cleansing label looks like
- ✓pH-balanced formula — ideally 4.5 to 5.5 for intimate skin
- ✓Sulphate-free — no SLS, SLES or ammonium lauryl sulphate
- ✓Short ingredients list with recognisable botanical names
- ✓Natural or naturally-derived cleansing agents
- ✓No synthetic fragrance listed as "fragrance" or "parfum"
- ✗No ingredient ending in -sulphate or -sulfate
- ✗No long list of chemical compounds near the top of the list
- ✗No foam-boosting agents like cocamide DEA
A product that does not lather much is not a product that cleans less. It is usually a product that is being gentler with your skin. The moment you stop equating foam with clean is the moment your skin starts to actually recover.
A final word
We are not suggesting you throw out everything in your bathroom today. What we are suggesting is that the next time a product runs out — check the back of its replacement before you buy it. Look for sulphates. If they are there, choose something without them instead.
It is a small change. But for many people — especially those who have struggled with sensitive or reactive skin for years — it is the change that makes everything else better.
At Dream Glow Rituals, every single product we make is sulphate-free. Not as a trend. Not as a marketing point. Because sulphates do not belong in intimate skincare, and they never did. ✦
