5 Ingredients to Remove From Your Bathroom Right Now
Dream Glow Rituals · Melbourne, Australia · 7 min read
Most people have no idea what is in their skincare. The labels are long, the names are unpronounceable, and the marketing on the front of the bottle says something completely different to what the ingredients list says on the back.
We are not here to scare you. We are here to inform you — because once you know what to look for, reading a skincare label takes about thirty seconds and you will never look at a product the same way again.
Here are five ingredients that appear in some of the most popular skincare and personal care products on the market — including products marketed as "gentle," "natural" and "dermatologist-recommended." If any of these are in your current products, it might be time for a bathroom audit.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
Also listed as: Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) · Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate
SLS is a foaming agent — it is what makes your shampoo, body wash and intimate wash lather up so satisfyingly. The problem is that foam does not equal clean. SLS works by stripping oil from surfaces, and it does not discriminate between the bad stuff and the good stuff your skin actually needs.
For intimate skin in particular, SLS is especially problematic. Your skin in sensitive areas has a natural pH between 3.8 and 4.5 — slightly acidic, and that acidity is protective. SLS disrupts this balance, stripping away your natural protective layer and leaving skin vulnerable to irritation, dryness and imbalance. Many women who experience recurring discomfort are unknowingly using SLS-based products every single day.
Parabens
Also listed as: Methylparaben · Propylparaben · Butylparaben · Ethylparaben
Parabens are preservatives used to extend the shelf life of cosmetic products. They are incredibly effective at preventing mould and bacteria growth — but they work by mimicking oestrogen in the body. This means they can interfere with your hormonal system in ways that researchers are still studying.
They are absorbed through the skin and have been detected in human tissue. While the debate about their safety continues in scientific circles, many consumers and brands have already decided the precautionary principle applies — if there is a safer alternative, why use the one that raises questions?
Synthetic Fragrance
Also listed as: Parfum · Fragrance · Aroma · Perfume
This is one of the most deceptive entries on a cosmetic ingredients list. The word "fragrance" or "parfum" is an umbrella term that can legally conceal hundreds of individual chemical compounds — none of which manufacturers are required to disclose. A single "fragrance" listing can contain up to 3,000 different chemicals.
Synthetic fragrance is one of the leading causes of skin sensitisation and allergic reactions worldwide. For intimate skin, which is significantly more permeable than regular skin, synthetic fragrance is particularly problematic. If a product smells strongly and lists "parfum" or "fragrance" in the ingredients — that scent is not coming from natural plant extracts. It is coming from synthetic chemistry.
PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)
Also listed as: PEG-4 · PEG-8 · PEG-100 · Ceteareth · Polyethylene
PEGs are petroleum-derived compounds used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents and softeners. On their own they are not the main concern — the problem is that PEGs act as penetration enhancers. They make your skin more permeable, which means anything else in the product — including the less desirable ingredients — gets absorbed more deeply and efficiently than it would without them.
PEGs are also often contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane during the manufacturing process — compounds that are considered potentially harmful. They are widely used because they are cheap and effective, not because they are the safest option available.
Formaldehyde Releasers
Also listed as: DMDM Hydantoin · Imidazolidinyl Urea · Diazolidinyl Urea · Quaternium-15
These are preservatives that work by slowly releasing formaldehyde over time to prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen — classified as such by the World Health Organisation. The amounts released by these ingredients in cosmetics are small, but for people with sensitive skin or those using multiple products daily, the cumulative exposure adds up.
The reason they are still widely used is simple — they are cheap and highly effective preservatives. But there are better alternatives, and brands that genuinely prioritise skin safety use them.
What to do instead
We are not suggesting you throw everything out today — that is wasteful and overwhelming. But the next time a product runs out, replace it with something that does not contain these five ingredients. Over time your bathroom cabinet transforms, and so does your skin.
What to look for on a clean label
- ✓Ingredients you can mostly recognise — plant names, oils, botanical extracts
- ✓A short ingredients list — the fewer the ingredients, the less room for unwanted additions
- ✓Preservatives like vitamin E (tocopherol), rosemary extract or sodium benzoate instead of parabens
- ✓Scent from named botanical sources — "rose water," "lavender oil" rather than just "fragrance"
- ✗No SLS, SLES or ammonium lauryl sulphate
- ✗No "-paraben" ingredients
- ✗No "fragrance" or "parfum" listed without further detail
- ✗No PEG- ingredients
- ✗No DMDM hydantoin or other formaldehyde releasers
"Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it. The question worth asking is — would you be comfortable eating the ingredients in your skincare?"
